What is Support Coordination in the NDIS?
Support coordination is a service provided under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It is designed to help NDIS members manage their NDIS plans and get the most out of them. Support Coordinators work closely with participants to understand their goals, needs, and aspirations and then help them connect with appropriate community support services.
Support coordination aims to empower participants by giving them the knowledge and skills to choose and manage their NDIS plans. The Support Coordinator serves as a mentor and advocate, helping participants understand the program, identifying appropriate service providers, coordinating services, and resolving issues that arise during the process.
Depending on the complexity of the participant’s needs, support systems are available at three levels:
Level 1 - Support Connection
- This support assists in connecting stakeholders with service providers and community resources.
Level 2 - Support Coordination
- This level includes assisting with coordinating multiple grants, negotiating service contracts, and ensuring effective service delivery.
Level 3 - Specialist Support Coordination
- This level provides more in-depth support for participants with complex needs or difficult circumstances requiring specialised networking and expertise.
